What is Reiki?

Well there is the answer that you’ll see all over Google, and social media that sounds like a non-answer if you haven’t done any additional research yourself.

And then there is the answer for a skeptic, or maybe for someone who doesn’t want to “just try it” to find out.

I like to say that Reiki is the training wheels to therapy. One session, with the right Reiki practitioner is the equivalent of a really good sedative. Several sessions with the right Reiki practitioner is like getting to the root cause of years and years worth of emotional and physical pain and healing it.

Learning Reiki, is a whole other level of the experience. Because you understand things differently. It unlocks something that you didn’t realize you needed to know. Things that, maybe you’ve been working on in therapy; or continue to struggle with in your personal life – suddenly it makes sense. I’m not saying you immediately have the answer and everything is fixed, but you can clearly see the root cause. You start to assess things differently.

So yes, when asked, what is Reiki? I don’t enjoy just saying to people that it’s providing life force energy to heal someone. Or that I remove negative energy from them. Or that I open, clear and balance their chakras. It’s more than that. And just because I can do it, doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m the right practitioner for you. I know I’m supposed to sell myself as THE practitioner. But I don’t think that’s how Reiki works. Everyone who practices Reiki has different gifts to offer, and someone else may be able to provide something different and just as beneficial if not more so.

How did I get into Reiki?

Honestly? A psychic mentor told me I used to be a Reiki practitioner in a previous life.

I know I’ve had at least one previous life (thats a story for another time), so that news didn’t exactly shock me. However I don’t think I had ever heard the term “Reiki” before she said it.

It took me several years to work up the courage and find a place that I felt comfortable going to.

Once I did find a place and booked a session, the minute it began it was like I was overwhelmed with remembering the motions. I felt like I was having an out of body experience. I felt both relaxed, and overcome with emotion from some distant memory that I couldn’t place. But it felt like coming home.

As soon as the session was over I asked if she taught Reiki. I was so excited to begin to uncover what was laying dormant in some long forgotten corner of my mind.

If you are looking into getting into Reiki yourself, there are many options available to you now. A lot of online practitioners offer distance Reiki sessions (like myself); and there are a lot of Metaphysical stores that offer in-person Reiki sessions. You can even ask some of the Reiki practitioners who may be local to you if they offer in-person sessions if that is something you are interested in.

If you are interested in learning how to become a practitioner yourself, lots of online teachers are offering online courses with certification now. Udemy is also a great resource for learning Reiki via online. If you prefer an in-person approach (which is what I did), you can ask your local metaphysical stores if they know of someone who teaches (they may offer classes themselves).
